On July 26, 1930, João Pessoa was assassinated by João Duarte Dantas in a confectionery shop in Recife, an episode that caused considerable controversy throughout Brazil and boosted the 1930 Revolution. His body was buried in Rio de Janeiro and the capital of Paraíba, previously called Cidade da Paraíba, was renamed João Pessoa in his honor.
