Westmeath is an active sporting county. The Westmeath GAA senior football team won the Leinster Senior Football Championship, the Delaney Cup, in 2004. They also won the National Football League Division 2 in 2001, 2003 and 2008. The Westmeath senior hurling team has enjoyed much recent success winning the Christy Ring Cup in 2005, 2007 and 2010.
Pat Gallagher (born 29 March 1963) is the chief executive of Westmeath County Council and a former Labour Party politician. He was a Teachta Dála (TD) for Laois–Offaly from 1992 to 1997. [1] Previously a workshop manager, Gallagher contested the 1989 general election.
Kevin Moran (born 12 May 1963) is an Irish independent politician who has been a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Longford–Westmeath constituency since the 2024 general election, and previously from 2016 to 2020. [1] He was a member of Westmeath County Council from June to November 2024.
