History. The Ryerson Building was the first permanent home of the Grand Rapids Library. Andrew Carnegie pledged $150,000 to support the new building, but the building was named for its other donor, Martin A. Ryerson, who was a Grand Rapids native. The building opened around 1904, after about two years of construction.
