In 1973, Stokols joined the Program in Social Ecology at the University of California, Irvine as an assistant professor. From 1988 to 1998, Stokols served as Director of the Program in Social Ecology and founding dean of the new School of Social Ecology, which was established as the first such school of its kind by the UC Regents in 1992.
