The Inheritance Cycle is a tetralogy of young adult high fantasy novels written by American author Christopher Paolini.Set in the fictional world of Alagaësia (/ æ l ə ˈ ɡ eɪ z i ə /), the novels focus on the adventures of a teenage boy named Eragon and his dragon, Saphira, as they struggle to overthrow the evil king Galbatorix.

Galbatorix spent years collecting Eldunari, drawing his power from the dragons he slew. After some training, Eragon visits Rhunön, the elven blacksmith who forged swords for Riders. Rhunön refuses to forge Eragon a new sword, having sworn to never create a weapon again, and having depleted her stocks of the required metal.
There, Galbatorix easily subdues them, and reveals that he has learned the true name of the ancient language, referred to as the Word. With it, he is able to control the usage of magic with the ancient language, negating any spoken spells. To amuse himself, he orders Murtagh and Eragon to fight using only their swords.
Brom insists on accompanying him and Saphira, and gives Eragon the sword Zar'roc. Eragon becomes a Dragon Rider, through his bond with Saphira. He is the only known Rider in Alagaësia other than King Galbatorix, who, with the help of the now-dead Forsworn, a group of rogue Riders, killed every other Rider a century ago.

He is best known for The Inheritance Cycle, which consists of the books Eragon (2002), Eldest (2005), Brisingr (2008), Inheritance (2011), the follow-up short story collection The Fork, the Witch, and the Worm (2018), and Murtagh (2023), the first in a follow-up duology.
