In 1936, Vulcan , a diesel-mechanical 0-6-0 shunter with a Vulcan-Frichs 6-cylinder 275 hp (205 kW) diesel engine was loaned to the LMS, and was then used by the War Department , which numbered it 75 (later 70075).
In the late 1940s, NZR was looking for a more powerful type of diesel shunting locomotive to work in the Wellington railway yards. They had trialled a number of T R class shunting locomotives, none at the time were suitable with the most powerful being the five T R class 0-4-0DM shunting locomotives which produced 153 horsepower.

A larger diesel shunter, this one was built by British Railways at Horwich Works in 1961. At first numbered D4107 and sent to Carlisle, in October 1968 it was transferred to the Southern Region, initially at Hither Green TMD where it would have worked alongside its predecessor here (Class 08 D3462). It was renumbered to 09019 in 1973. [44]
The British Rail Class 06 is a class of 0-4-0 diesel-mechanical shunters built by Andrew Barclay Sons and Company from 1958 [1] to 1960 for use on the Scottish Region of British Railways. They were originally numbered D2410–D2444 and survivors after 1973 were given the TOPS numbers 06001–06010.
