Shinji Ikari (Japanese: 碇 シンジ, Hepburn: Ikari Shinji) is a fictional character from the Neon Genesis Evangelion franchise created by Gainax. He is the franchise's poster boy and protagonist. In the anime series of the same name, Shinji is a boy abandoned by his estranged father, Gendo, after the mysterious death of Shinji's mother, Yui.
Yui Ikari (碇 ユイ, Ikari Yui) is Shinji's mother [323] [324] and Gendo's wife. [325] In 1999, when she was a student at Kyoto University, she met Professor Fuyutsuki and discussed research on artificial evolution with him. Later that year, she became romantically involved with Gendo, whom she married, to Fuyutsuki's disappointment.
Ritsuko discovers her mother and Gendo are in a romantic relationship. One day, Gendo brings a young girl named Rei Ayanami into Gehirn. Naoko, after completing the Magi supercomputers, finds Rei alone and lost in Gehirn's base; Rei starts calling Naoko "old hag", saying it was Gendo who referred to her that way.
After witnessing his mother Yui Ikari's death as a child, Shinji is abandoned by his father, Gendo Ikari. He is emotionally hypersensitive and sometimes does as expected out of fear of rejection, but he has often rebelled and refused to pilot the Eva because of the excruciating harm that has been done to him or to his friends.
