Glade Springs is an unincorporated community consisting of a gated community and resort located just outside Beckley in Raleigh County, West Virginia, United States. [ 1 ] The community was founded in 1973 and was originally marketed towards the "working rich" operators of independent coal mines in that area.
Early instances of western Virginia plantations with grand homes include the John Ariss-designed Harewood (1774) for George Washington's brother Samuel Washington and Happy Retreat (1780) built by Washington's younger brother Charles Washington, both of which are located near Charles Town in present-day Jefferson County.
The Resort at Glade Springs is located eight miles north of Winterplace in Daniels, West Virginia, near the intersection of I-77 and Interstate 64. Alfred Beckley (1802–88) said that he named the county for Sir Walter Raleigh (1552–1618), the "enterprising and far-seeing patron of the earliest attempts to colonize our old Mother State of Virginia". [7] Raleigh was one of fifty Virginia Counties that were admitted to the Union as the state of West Virginia on June 20, 1863.

General Alfred Beckley (1802–88) wanted his home to be the center of what he envisioned for Beckley, West Virginia which he founded in 1838. Although his town was a piece of paper in 1838, it would later become the county seat of Raleigh County, West Virginia, which was also founded by Beckley in 1850. [2]
