A new school for the boys was planned at Mile End. It opened in 1938, and was named Stockport School. The war interrupted, but on its conclusion the Education Act 1944 (Butler Act) reorganised secondary education. Stockport School was deemed a boys grammar school, and losing its comprehensive intake, it remained as such until comprehensivisation.

Between 1830 and 1916 the school was located at the corner of Greek Street and Wellington Road in a building occupying part of the site of the present Stockport College. The school moved again to purpose-built premises at Mile End, then on the outskirts of the town, subsequently absorbing the adjacent site of the town's Convent High School in 1978.

The school was founded in 1487 by Sir Edmund Shaa, the 1482 Lord Mayor of London whose will provided for a school and a small chapel in St Mary's Church in Stockport and funds to maintain a priest to chant masses and teach grammar. In 1991 it was converted into a college of further education; the girls' school became known as the Bulkley Building, and the boys' school became the Moseley Building. Initially the college was called Margaret Danyers College on North Downs Road. In the early 1990s, Stockport replaced its school sixth forms with separate sixth form colleges.
