Oak Chair, Rohlfs, 1898-9, Princeton University Art Museum. Charles Rohlfs (February 15, 1853 – June 30, 1936), was an American actor, patternmaker, stove designer and furniture maker. Rohlfs is a representative of the Arts and Crafts Movement, and is most famous for his skill as a furniture designer and maker. [1]
Maarten Baas's Schiphol Clock. Real Time is an art installation series by Dutch designer Maarten Baas. It consists of works in which people manually create and erase the hands on a clock each minute. Portions of the time depiction are completed using CGI after the motions of the painter are filmed separately and repeated to complete the 24 hours.
As the art of making clocks became more widespread and distinguished, guilds specifically for this trade emerged around the sixteenth century. One of the first guilds developed in London, England, known as the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers; the group formed after a small number of foreign-trained clockmakers spent time working in London. [3]
Therefore, in 1882 the Crafts School (today Applied Art and Design School) was founded along the museum. The building, constructed in 1888 by Hermann Bollé , is one of the first purpose-built edifices devised to merge the functions of the museum and the school.
The Arts and Crafts movement emerged from the attempt to reform design and decoration in mid-19th century Britain. It was a reaction against a perceived decline in standards that the reformers associated with machinery and factory production.
