The Society was founded in 1896 by Alyn Williams, originally as The Society of Miniature Painters. A royal charter was granted by King Edward VII in 1904, and it became the Royal Miniature Society. [4] To highlight the Society's growing importance, the President's Jewel was commissioned in 1920.
The factory added to its products sterling goods and high-grade nickel-silver-plated ware, both flat and hollow. Still later, by experiment, Mr. Wallace devised a new process of manufacture from steel. It made a less bulky, firmer, and a lighter base for silver plating. Also in 1871, Wallace, his sons, and sons-in-law formed a new company.

According to Sotheby's in New York, "The publicity of the award and the impression the firm made on the fair's 8 million visitors was continued by the catalogues and other intensive marketing; by the end of the 1870s Meriden Britannia Co. was considered the largest silverware company in the world."
