Lafayette is a census-designated place in the center of Deer Creek Township, Madison County, Ohio, United States. [1] It is located along U.S. Route 40, just west of its intersection with U.S. Route 42. [3] The population of Lafayette was 206 at the 2020 census.
Located in the central part of the county, it borders the following townships: Monroe Township - north; Jefferson Township - east; Fairfield Township - southeast corner; Union Township - south
Statewide, the only other Deer Creek Township is located in Madison County. Deer Creek Township was named for the creek that runs through it. In the 1830s, there were two gristmills and two saw mills located on the creek. [4]
A dam was built across Deer Creek in this location, and the 6-foot (1.8 m) deep, 98-acre (40 ha) lake was filled within a year. In 1950, the lake was turned over to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. The 183 acres (74 ha) of land surrounding the lake has since become Madison Lake State Park. [2]
