Just a FWIW observation. Unless you absolutely, positively, without a doubt need Adobe Reader, there are several free alternatives that are smaller in size, load faster, and don't contain as much bloatware. A few examples are Sumatra, Cute PDF reader, Nitro PDF reader, PDF-Xchange viewer, Cool PDF reader, and Foxit.
Adobe Reader XI SLOW in Windows 7 64-bit. Just installed Reader XI (11) on a perfectly fine laptop running 7 x64. Holy cow, Reader XI is WAY slow doing ANYTHING--not just opening the program or PDF's, but even clicking in its menus. I found this thread re: Reader X/10 and followed Spengler's advice--disabled "Protected Mode." That's the ticket.
Run as administrator and only select Adobe Reader 9 and/or Adobe Reader XI if in the list. (If not in the list exit out.) Click the remove button making absolutely sure no other programs other than Adobe Reader are selected. Try reinstalling Adobe Reader again. When you're finished you can remove the Microsoft Installer Cleanup from your computer.

It should help. Try downloading and merging the lnk (LNK) and exe options in that tutorial to see if it may help. It sounds like you may have set the lnk extension (shortcuts) to "Open with" Adobe Reader. Default File Type Associations - Restore. I tried to open a file and was prompted with an Open With screen.

It seems lately, that any time I download a .pdf file and my adobe reader displays, it is of poor quality. It used to be quite crisp but now it is "jagged" For example: Notice the letter "O" in office or the "G". Seems no font change etc. Normal non pdf files are crisp and easily read. My reader file name ends with an "x" (Adobe Reader X)
