    Just a FWIW observation. Unless you absolutely, positively, without a doubt need Adobe Reader, there are several free alternatives that are smaller in size, load faster, and don't contain as much bloatware. A few examples are Sumatra, Cute PDF reader, Nitro PDF reader, PDF-Xchange viewer, Cool PDF reader, and Foxit.

    It should help. Try downloading and merging the lnk (LNK) and exe options in that tutorial to see if it may help. It sounds like you may have set the lnk extension (shortcuts) to "Open with" Adobe Reader. Default File Type Associations - Restore. I tried to open a file and was prompted with an Open With screen.
