McGregor died in Whanganui on 4 March 1920, and was buried at the Wanganui Old Cemetery, [12] now the Heads Road Cemetery. [2]In 1921, a waka maumahara (memorial canoe) to McGregor was erected at Toronui Point on Rotokawau Virginia Lake; it consisted of a half tōtara river canoe set with the bow pointing towards the sky. The Chronicle's rival from 1867 onward was The Evening Herald (later The Wanganui Herald), founded by John Ballance. The ownership of the two daily papers merged in the 1970s, and in 1986 the Herald became a free weekly, later renamed the Wanganui Midweek. [1] The Chronicle is currently Whanganui's only daily newspaper.

McDouall was born in Wanganui to Shirley (née Sanson) and Gerald McDouall [5] and attended Wanganui Collegiate School. He studied law and arts at the University of Otago. McDouall was a winner on the gameshow Sale of the Century and was the champion of TVNZ's Mastermind programme in 1990, collectively winning nearly $100,000 worth in prizes. [6]
