David Raymond Sedaris (/ s ɪ ˈ d ɛər ɪ s / sih-DAIR-iss; born December 26, 1956) [1] [2] is an American humorist, comedian, author, and radio contributor. He was publicly recognized in 1992 when National Public Radio broadcast his essay "Santaland Diaries". He published his first collection of essays and short stories, Barrel Fever, in 1994.
The book details Sedaris’ life, from his unusual upbringing in the suburbs of Raleigh, North Carolina, to his booze-and-drug-ridden college years, to his Kerouacian wandering as a young adult. The book became a best-seller and was acclaimed for its wit, dark humor and irreverent tackling of tragic events, including the death of Sedaris’ mother.
The Best of Me is mostly composed of works that previously appeared in other books by Sedaris. Five essays whose inclusion marks their first time in a Sedaris collection are indicated by N/A in the "Previously appeared in" column, although all five were originally published in The New Yorker between 1996 and 2020.
