The Pells outdoor swimming baths in Lewes is the oldest documented fresh or spring water public pool in the United Kingdom that is still running. The baths were established by public subscription in 1860 and built in 1861, and originally had two pools alongside each other—a subscription bath, and a public bath that was free.
The lido opened in 1932. The buildings were designed by Grange-over-Sands Urban District Council's surveyor, named Bernard Smith [2] or Thomas Huddlestone. [3] The lido sits on Grange promenade on the shore of Morecambe Bay, although as of 2019 the changing course of the River Kent means that the sea is at some distance from the promenade, separated by salt marsh.
The "training pool" is located in the basement and is 16 m (52 ft) by 50 m (160 ft) in size, with a constant depth of 1.8 m (5 ft 11 in). A traversable boom allows separation into two 25 m (82 ft) length pools, one of which can be varied in depth from floor level to 1.8 m (5 ft 11 in).
