When Peterhead was founded, in 1593, [2] it was known as the "Harbour and Barony of Keith Insche commonly called Peterhead". [3] The harbour was proving so valuable that in 1738, the Leith shipmasters attested that "the harbour of Peterhead is in our opinion the best situate of any place in Scotland for all ships trading on the north seas". Peterhead was, and remains, an important fishing port, and the breakwater gave it an advantage over other fishing ports. The north breakwater, constructed between 1912 and 1956, [16] is approximately 1,500 ft (460 m) long. [17] Peterhead was a Jacobite-supporting town in the Jacobite risings of 1715 and 1745.
The constituency covers parts of both Aberdeenshire and Moray. It is one of the five constituencies covering Aberdeenshire in the Scottish Parliament, alongside Aberdeenshire East, Aberdeenshire West, Aberdeen South and North Kincardine and Angus North and Mearns. The rest of Moray is represented by the Moray constituency.

Baddeley was born in Rocester, Staffordshire in 1843, the son of a solicitor.He was educated at King Edward's School, Birmingham and Clare College, Cambridge.He then worked as a classics master at Somersetshire College, Bath and Sheffield Grammar School (1880-1884) before retiring from teaching and moving to the Lake District, first to Windermere and then Bowness-on-Windermere.
