The following is a list of school districts that serve the city of Phoenix, Arizona. Many separate independent school districts serve Phoenix. This is a legacy of the city expanding through annexation of bordering territory; many of the school districts were in existence prior to their territories becoming part of the city.
Prior to 1970, the school district had autonomous community schools and racial segregation; at that time all schools were integrated and the district was unified, with centrally located schools. After 1970 the white student population declined, with some students going to the Robert F. Munroe Day School and the Tallavanna Christian School. [5]
