It was the only country to have embassies in the various bantustan states of Transkei , Venda , Bophuthatswana and Ciskei that South Africa established.
China has an embassy in Pretoria. South Africa has an embassy in Beijing and a consulate-general in both Hong Kong and Shanghai. Despite Pretoria's long relationship with the government in Taiwan and late recognition of the People's Republic of China (PRC) in 1998 the two countries currently enjoy an increasingly close relationship.
