In late 1962, USF Founding President John S. Allen [2] asked for the State University System to consider a school of engineering. On October 19, 1962, the Florida State Board of Control granted "tentative approval" for the establishment of an engineering school at USF, placing the project at the bottom of the Board's list of priorities for the following academic year.
The Sulphur Springs Water Tower The tower sits on a 13-acre tract of land on the Hillsborough River.. Sulphur Springs Water Tower is a landmark of Tampa, Florida.It stands 214 feet (65 m) tall, with a foundation 45 feet (14 m) deep which makes it visible from nearby Interstate 275 and much of the rest of Sulphur Springs. [1]
It spans Lower Tampa Bay to connect Pinellas County (St. Petersburg, Florida) to Manatee County (Terra Ceia, Florida). The current Sunshine Skyway opened in 1987 and is the second bridge of that name on the site. It was designed by the Figg & Muller Engineering Group and built by the American Bridge Company. [9]
A 1748 British map had "B. del Spirito Santo" for Tampa Bay and "Carlos Bay" to the south. A Spanish map of 1757 renamed Tampa Bay as "San Fernando". As late as 1774, Bernard Romans called Tampa Bay "Bay of Espiritu Santo", with "Tampa Bay" restricted to the Northwest arm, what is now Old Tampa Bay, and the northeast arm named "Hillsborough Bay".
Tampa Bay formed approximately 6,000 years ago as a brackish drowned river valley type [4] estuary with a wide mouth connecting it to the Gulf of Mexico.Prior to that time, it was a large fresh water lake, possibly fed by the Floridan Aquifer through natural springs. [5]
Fred Ball Park, also previously called Palma Ceia Spring Park, is a small park off Bayshore Blvd in Tampa, FL. The park has benches, a fountain, and a view of Tampa Bay . The Park is named after Fred Ball who served Tampa and Hillsborough County for 24 years in local government.
The USF Tampa Library also houses several Special and Digital Collections, including literature, oral histories, photographs, artifacts, and the university archives. [102] In 2012, the USF Tampa Library opened the Science, Math, and Research Technology (SMART) Lab: a hands-on learning space which includes more than 300 computer work stations. [103]
Tampa was the first spring training site in Florida, beginning in 1913 with the Chicago Cubs. [11] In the ensuing decades, the city hosted several different Major League Baseball teams for spring training and was home to several different minor league squads during the summer, first at Plant Field near downtown and later at Al Lopez Field near West Tampa.
