In 1984 38 Special toured with the up-and-coming Huey Lewis and the News, who were just breaking huge with their Sports album, and in 1986 they shared the bill with the soon-to-be-platinum-selling hard rock band Bon Jovi. He is best known as a member of the band 38 Special, from its formation in 1974 until 2013. He is the middle of three sons; his older brother Ronnie was the original lead singer for Lynyrd Skynyrd who died in a 1977 plane crash in Mississippi , and his younger brother Johnny has been the lead singer for Lynyrd Skynyrd since 1987.
Barnes rejoined 38 Special in 1992 and has remained with them ever since. As of 2021, he is the only original member still with the band. [ 2 ] His solo album was released on June 30, 2017, on MelodicRock Records.

While in Billy Satellite, he was a studio musician for Taxxi, an English band that played Euro-tech music. [1] [5] He recorded three albums with Taxxi from 1982 to 1985, including States of Emergency, Foreign Tongue, and Expose. [5] In 1987 after the break up of Billy Satellite, Chauncey joined 38 Special, staying with them through 2019. [1]
Carl rehearsed with the band frequently, and by 1988, he joined forces with the southern rock stylings of .38 Special. That year, the band would release the Rock & Roll Strategy album, which included the Cal Curtis/Jeff Carlisi tune that Carl reworked (earning him an additional writing credit) into "Second Chance," featuring Carl on lead vocals.
The band Riggs has reunited for occasional one night engagements, most recently on November 28, 2009, playing at The Loft in Atlanta. Riggs started touring as a lead guitarist with 38 Special in 2019.
