The University of Glasgow (abbreviated as Glas. in post-nominals; Scottish Gaelic: Oilthigh Ghlaschu [7]) is a public research university in Glasgow, Scotland. Founded by papal bull in 1451 [ O.S. 1450], [ 8 ] it is the fourth-oldest university in the English-speaking world and one of Scotland's four ancient universities .

The Glasgow School was a circle of influential artists and designers that began to coalesce in Glasgow, Scotland in the 1870s, and flourished from the 1890s to around 1910. The original school was founded as the Choir School of Glasgow Cathedral in around 1124, and later became known as Glasgow Grammar School. It was housed in Greyfriar's Wynd until 1782, when it moved to new purpose-built accommodation in George Street, but it moved again in 1821 to new premises between John Street and Montrose Street. Unused buildings at Berkeley Street, Sandyford (also a site used by Woodside Secondary School until 1999), were identified, and reopened in August 2006 as Glasgow Gaelic School, providing Gaelic medium education for pre-5, primary and secondary pupils.
The school originally opened in 1962. The original buildings were demolished in 2002, with a new, smaller school opening in 2004. This was part of a widespread program of rebuilding and refurbishing schools throughout Glasgow by Glasgow City Council in a PFI program. The Glasgow Academy's preparatory school is the first school in the UK to have been awarded the Diana Gold Award for Anti-Bullying. [9] In 2024, The Glasgow Academy was awarded the Employer Recognition Scheme Gold Award by the Ministry of Defence. [10] The current rector is Matt Gibson, who has held the position since 2025. [11]
