The former Byram School is located in westernmost Greenwich, set on a knoll near the Byram River. The property is bounded on the northwest by United States Route 1, from which it is not visible, by town-owned family housing to its north, and by town athletic facilities to the south, from which it is separated by a stand of mature trees where a war memorial is located.
After dwindling enrollment during the Great Depression and World War II, the academy closed in 1943. The town of East Greenwich purchased the buildings and used them as a school for several years until many of them were demolished in the 1960s. Around the same time, St. Luke's Episcopal Church purchased and demolished two of the other buildings.
