Brannigan, Kif, and the rest of the crew set off for the face on Mars, one of the two entrances to the Martian reservation. Brannigan botches the negotiations, and the Martians call up another dust storm, which engulfs Amy. Kif jumps on the back of Amy's buggalo and flies it into the whirlwind, recovering Amy.
Before the fake relationships are exposed, Kif calls Brannigan to the bridge; a new course Brannigan chose has endangered the ship. Brannigan pilots the ship too close to a black hole. Realizing the danger, Brannigan promotes Kif to Captain before fleeing the ship. Fry and Leela nearly kiss before they are interrupted by the ship breaking in half.
Lieutenant Kif Kroker (voiced by Maurice LaMarche) is the long-suffering assistant to Captain Zapp Brannigan, consort of Amy, and Fourth Lieutenant on the Democratic Order of Planets (DOOP) starship Nimbus. Kif is a short and thin green-skinned alien from the planet Amphibios 9.

As the crew arrives in the Vergon system, they find a security cordon put in place around the planet by the starship Nimbus, which Leela recognizes as the flagship of famed space captain Zapp Brannigan.
