In 2007, Duke Energy Indiana began construction of a 618 megawatt (MW) integrated gasification combined cycle power plant (IGCC). This plant was to be the first of its kind of its size. The gasification process makes coal react with pure oxygen and steam to produce synthetic gas, or syngas.
Originally referred to as the IUPUI Student Center, the plans for a dedicated campus center were revealed in 1997 and titled “Project 2000.” [3] The project planned to house the new campus bookstore and various student-related administrative offices such as the bursar, registrar, and admission office in one central location.
The Indiana University Trustees purchased the hotel and conference center for a total of $17.5 million in 2005 but talks of the deal began in late 2004. The university felt that the hotel could serve as a residential hall for on-campus students and that the conference center was an important source of revenue.
