U.S. Customhouse and Post Office, also known as Historic City Hall, is a historic customs house and post office located at Springfield, Greene County, Missouri. It was built in 1891, and is a three-story, L-shaped, Romanesque Revival style limestone block building. An addition to the building was constructed in 1910–1914.
A post office called Galloway was established in 1883, and remained in operation until 1943. [4] The community has the name of a Union Army officer. [5] From 1945 and into the 1950s, the combined U.S. 60 - U.S. 65 highways passed through Galloway at the southeast entrance to Springfield. [6]

Other notable buildings include those on the Drury College campus, Central Christian Church (1926), St. Johns Episcopal Church (1886), Mary S. Boyd School (1911), and Trinity Lutheran Church (c. 1919). [2] [3] The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1989 with a boundary increase in 2002. [1]
The city of Springfield donated the golf course to the government. [1] Adjacent to the 160-acre property was the Pythian Home of Missouri built by the Knights of Pythias . [ 2 ] The Army, using an order of immediate possession, bought the "castle" from the Knights of Pythias for $40,625 which was half of its assessed value. [ 3 ]
The district includes parts of East Walnut Street, East Elm Street, East McDaniel Street, Cordova Court, South Hampton Avenue, South Florence Avenue, and South National Avenue. The district developed between about 1870 and 1940, with 21 buildings surviving from before 1900, and 59 buildings dating between 1901 and 1910. [2] [3] [4]
