The Education Act 1902 (the Balfour Act) laid the path to formal secondary education for 'able pupils' throughout the United Kingdom. In 1903 Frederick (Fred) Whitehouse M.A. (Oxon.) was appointed Dover's Director of Further Education and oversaw the transition of the local municipal school and School of Art into the new Dover County School for Boys and Girls which was formally founded in 1905.
In 1910, the County School split into 2 separate entities, Dover County School for Boys and Dover County School for Girls and, after housed in several buildings in Dover (Effingham Crescent, Godwyne Road and Maison Dieu Road), the school moved to the Boy's premises in Frith Road in 1934 who relocated to Astor Avenue.
Sarjeant, who was from Capel-le-Ferne, near Folkestone, Kent, went to Astor Secondary School in Dover. He was a member of the Scouts, becoming local patrol leader before leaving to join the Air Training Corps in 1978. In the ATC, Sarjeant won a marksman's badge, and he owned an air rifle.

In 2010, sponsored by Canterbury Christ Church University and co-sponsored by Dover Grammar School for Boys, Dover Grammar School for Girls and Kent County Council, the school was relaunched as Dover Christ Church Academy and received academy status. In 2014, the school underwent an £11.9 million refurbishment.
