Mosaic "Sacrifice of Isaac" – Basilica of San Vitale (547 AD) The Sacrifice of Isaac by Caravaggio (1603), in the Baroque tenebrist manner The Binding of Isaac (Hebrew: עֲקֵידַת יִצְחַק , romanized: ʿAqēḏaṯ Yīṣḥaq), or simply "The Binding" (הָעֲקֵידָה , hāʿAqēḏā), is a story from chapter 22 of the Book of Genesis in the Hebrew Bible.
The Binding of Isaac ' s plot is very loosely inspired by the biblical story of the same name. According to the Hebrew Bible, Abraham's well was seized by Abimelech's men (Genesis 21:25), and Isaac’s servants also dug a well at Beersheba (Genesis 26:25). The well is near the Old City of Beersheba and a wadi, Nahal Be'er Sheva, on the road to Neve Noy. It was described by Edward Robinson in 1838. [1]
The next burial in the cave is that of Abraham himself, who at the age of 175 years was buried by his sons Isaac and Ishmael. [26] The title deed to the cave was part of the property of Abraham that passed to his son Isaac. [27] [28] The third burial was that of Isaac, by his two sons Esau and Jacob, who died when he was 180 years old. [29]
An important connection was "The Sunset Road" (Hebrew: דֶּרֶךְ מְבוֹא הַשֶּמֶש Derech Mevo HaShemesh) (Deut 11:29–30) leading from The King's Highway, crossing the Jordan River at the location of today's Adam Bridge (Jisr Damiat) and ascending through the Tirtza Valley (Wadi Al Fara) to Mount Gerizim and Shechem.
The Book of Jubilees states that Ur was founded in 1688 Anno Mundi (year of the world) by 'Ur son of Kesed", presumably the offspring of Arphachshad, adding that in this same year wars began on Earth. "And ’Ûr, the son of Kêsêd, built the city of ’Arâ of the Chaldees, and called its name after his own name and the name of his father."
