The Aitau Range is a northern prolongation of the Chu-Ili Range.It is located to the south of the Mayzharylgan range. The Betpak-Dala desert lies to the west. [1] [2] [3]The highest point of the Aitau is 972 meters (3,189 ft) high Mount Sunkar, rising in the Khantau massif at the northwestern end of the range.

The Chu-Ili Range is ancient and heavily eroded. It is part of the Trans-Ili Alatau, a northern extension of the Tian Shan.It begins to the north of Otar, west of the Kurty, one of the main tributaries of the Ili river, and stretches in a roughly northwestern direction for less than 200 kilometers (120 mi).
Kyzylarai is located in the southern part of the Kazakh Uplands, north of Lake Balkhash and south of the Karkaraly Range. The slightly lower Kyzyltas massif rises to the northwest. The highest point of the Kazakh Uplands and of Central Kazakhstan, Mt Aksoran (1,565 metres (5,135 ft)), is located in the massif.
