Portland State University is also located on Broadway. The section west of the Willamette was the most vibrant street in downtown Portland even before it was renamed, in 1913, from 7th Avenue to Broadway, and this continued for decades. [1] During the day, it was a bustling shopping street, and remains a busy shopping street today.
Visitors were greeted by a 65-foot (20 m) high "Portland" sign above the Broadway Marquee, which contained approximately 6,000 theatrical lights. The sign was changed to read "Paramount" in 1930, remaining until 1984, when it was restored to "Portland". The theatre was designed with many foyers and lobbies.
To promote the theatre's reopening, 20th Century Fox chartered an airplane and brought celebrities to Portland, including Rex Allen, Edward Arnold, Van Heflin, Rita Moreno, Mary Murphy, Johnnie Ray, and Mamie Van Doren. City and state officials, along with members of the public, greeted the celebrities at Portland International Airport. [7]
