A circular reference is not to be confused with the logical fallacy of a circular argument.Although a circular reference will often be unhelpful and reveal no information, such as two entries in a book index referring to each other, it is not necessarily so that a circular reference is of no use.

This template indicates that the article cites a source that previously got its information from Wikipedia. Wikipedia may not cite itself, and citing a source that comes from Wikipedia is a circular reference, and may not be used as a citation for the same reason.

If the source is clearly quoting or referencing Wikipedia, use {{Circular reference}} instead. To verify the reliability of the source, discover when the fact was first added to the Wikipedia article with the Blame tool ( or use this older, stronger version ) , and try to find a source that supports the fact and was published before that date.
