Sanctuary on Camelback Mountain is a privately owned resort and spa located in Paradise Valley, Arizona. The resort, which opened in 2001, is located on 53 acres on the north face of Camelback Mountain. [1] It has 105 mountain and spa casitas as well as a collection of private homes. [2]
After discovery of Borax deposits here by Aaron and Rosie Winters in 1881, business associates William Tell Coleman and Francis Marion Smith subsequently obtained claims to these deposits, opening the way for "large-scale" borax mining in Death Valley. [3] Coleman constructed Harmony Borax Works and production of borax started in late 1883. [4]

The cave is privately owned, with tours available seasonally. [6] The cave was first discovered in 1924, [2] and in 1932, three spelunkers Al Cremer, Leo Tekippe, and Joe Flynn explored the cave and named the site Niagara Cave. [7] Niagara Cave opened as a show cave in June 1934, [4] and was described by geologist J Harlen Bretz in 1938. [8]
The Cave Creek Museum was opened in 1970 by the Cave Creek historical society. The society was established in 1968. Also among its outside exhibits are the First Church of Cave Creek, which was built in 1947; the Golden Reef Stamp Mill and the Cave Creek Bandshell which was built in 1900 and originally located in downtown Cave Creek.
George Spahn died on September 22, 1974, and is buried in Eternal Valley Memorial Park in nearby Newhall. [ 26 ] The Spahn Movie Ranch site is now part of California's Santa Susana Pass State Historic Park , the "Devil's Slide" section of the historic Old Santa Susana Stage Road being located on the park's western side.
