On March 29, 2021, Matt Figger was named the new head coach of the Vaqueros. [14] After a 29–65 record in three seasons, Figgar was fired on March 19, 2024. [15] Less than a week after Figgar's firing, UTRGV announced on March 25 it would leave the WAC for the Southland Conference effective that July. [16]

The regular season will end on March 16, 2025, with the 2025 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament beginning with the First Four on March 18 and ending with the championship game at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas, on April 7.
