CSS Virginia was the first steam-powered ironclad warship built by the Confederate States Navy during the first year of the American Civil War; she was constructed as a casemate ironclad using the razéed (cut down) original lower hull and engines of the scuttled steam frigate USS Merrimack.
Renamed Noe-Daquy, she operated during the early months of the American Civil War and in December 1862 was acquired by merchant at Havana, Cuba, for use as a Confederate blockade runner. Renamed Virginia, she was captured off Mugeres Island, Mexico, by the U.S. Navy sloop-of-war USS Wachusett and sidewheel gunboat USS Sonoma on 18 January 1863.
