I know that, alas, the 2014 Chevy Impala was the last front-bench seat car to be mass produced. I am looking for a reasonably priced used (150k miles or fewer) car in good condition for driving on rural hilly, often icy roads in winter. My husband has a rural postal route, and is not provided with a vehicle. He has been driving his large GMC truck to do this, but it’s dangerous. He has to ...
What cars if any, have what passes for a bench seat in front ? I saw 1999 Taurus where ugly middle console folded away to disappear and become bench seat for 3rd person to sit in front. HATE consoles - have never seen one that looks clean on ANY car including luxury.
can anyone give me a valid reason why we no longer are offered a bench front seat thus making a full sized sedan a 6 passenger auto, so we don’t have to purchase a ‘minivan’ or a ‘large’ SUV, just so we can haul 6 people. My last 6 passenger auto was a pontiac bonneville which is no longer made, wait even pontiac and oldsmobile are no longer made.
The most popular bench seat models are the Ford Crown Victoria/Mercury Grand Marquis, and some trim levels of the Chevy Impala. Also, as jtsanders mentioned, the Lacrosse, Lucerne and DTS. And I think someone mentioned at one time that some Toyota Avalons have the front bench, too.
A split bench maybe, but not a full on bench seat. Safety requirements for the front occupants are different from the rear and I don’t know how they would get around that 3-point harness and front air bag scenario. texases September 4, 2011, 1:08am 4. At the Impala ‘build it’ web page I found a 40/20/40 bench option for the LT.
Whitey June 16, 2012, 2:32am 7. I am surprised someone is still manufacturing a vehicle with a bench seat with a lap belt in the middle. If there is no third airbag, it seems like they’re just asking for a lawsuit. The only modification I would consider is a racing harness that attaches to the floor behind the seat, but even that will be iffy.
Marnet January 29, 2015, 3:20pm 7. Agreed that most bench seats were far more comfortable than any bucket seats in cars priced less than luxury $$$$$. Bucket seats are all sunken in the middle of seat bottom and seat back. It’s like sitting in miserable plastic bucket shaped stacking chairs.
Tester December 27, 2014, 8:54am 3. Reach between the seat cushion and back rest and pull the seat cushion up to a vertical position. Then pull the seat cushion out the drivers side rear door to remove it from its mounting bracket. Once the seat cushion is removed unbolt the folding back rest. Tester.
Bench seat and automatic transmission is key. Sliding back and forth to when placing mail in the box is possible with this. For short hops between boxes, you can left-foot the brake and accelerator and left-hand steer. Practice, a lot, before starting this on the route. Most any well maintained car or small SUV with a bench seat will suffice.
Only an auto engineer or auto marketer could provide the true answer. But the decision to not provide a bench seat or even a 60/40 split bench option in SUVs could be based on demand. To maximize profit and keep costs down, you need to keep volume up and minimize expensive options. A bench or a 60/40 split bench doesn’t seem like an expensive ...
