Dearborne Professor of New Testament Interpretation at Princeton Theological Seminary for 15 years before being called as President of Union Presbyterian Seminary in Richmond, Virginia in 2007.

He graduated from Hampden-Sydney College in 1950, and from Union Presbyterian Seminary in Virginia in 1954. He was ordained in 1954. His first pastorate included four rural congregations in Virginia.
