Castleton is the primary village [5] and a census-designated place (CDP) in the town of Castleton, Rutland County, Vermont, United States. As of the 2020 census , it had a population of 1,337, [ 2 ] out of 4,458 in the entire town.
The town has one school: Castleton Elementary School, which serves grades K–6. [11] [12] [13] Students from Castleton families attend high school at Fair Haven Union High School and attend junior high at Fair Haven Union Middle School. [14] Castleton University is located in Castleton and dates back to 1787. It is a public liberal arts college.
The institution frequently changed its name during the 19th century. At various times it was known as Castleton Academy, Castleton Academy and Female Seminary, Vermont Classical High School (1828–1830), and Castleton Seminary (1830–1876). [7] In 1823, instruction in "the solid branches of female education" began for "young Ladies and Misses".

It was moved a short distance (200 yards (180 m)) in the 20th century to make way for new construction on the Castleton University campus. [4]
