Development of Namibia's army was the fastest of the three arms of service. The first units of the Army were deployed as early as 1990. The Army was formed when the two former enemies South West African Territorial Force and the People's Liberation Army of Namibia were inducted after Namibia's independence into the newly created Namibian Defence Force.
Engineer Regiment colloquially known as "The Sappers", is the Engineer arm of the Namibian Army based at Otavi. It is an independent regiment that functions as the Army's Engineer Corps and hosts all the engineer squadrons of the Army. It was founded in 1991 as the engineer company, [2] later it was upgraded into the Engineer regiment. [3]
The school traces its roots back to the Namibian Liberation struggle when the forerunner to today's military school was established in late 1979 as the "SWA Military School" by the South West African Territorial Force during the South African administration of Namibia. [1] The school is the primary training unit of the force.
The Namibian Air Force is the aerial warfare branch of the Namibian Defence Force. It was commissioned on 13 March 2005 at Grootfontein Air Force Base . [ 2 ] Following the independence of Namibia from South Africa in 1990, the Air Defence Wing of the Namibian Defence Force was established on 23 July 1994. [ 2 ]
