The saguaro is a columnar cactus that grows notable branches, usually referred to as arms. Over 50 arms may grow on one plant, with one specimen having 78 arms. [6] Saguaros grow from 3–16 m (10–52 ft) tall, and up to 75 cm (30 in) in diameter. They are slow growing, and routinely live 150 to 200 years.

The cattle industry of the Southwest United States has begun to cultivate O. ficus-indica, [3] [10] both as a feed source for cattle and a boundary fence. Cattle are normally fed a spineless variety of the cactus. [10] The cactus pads are low in dry matter and crude protein but useful as a supplement in drought conditions.
The stems are armed with clusters of up to about 10 red to pink [10] spines, which may be 3 cm (1.2 in) long [10] and are barbed and sharp enough to easily penetrate leather gardening gloves. [12] The stems and fruits also have many spines or "glochids" about 1 mm (0.04 in) long [ 10 ] that can detach and stick in the skin.
