Ruger #1 in .45-70. Must be a pattern with him and that caliber but it is his favorite centerfire caliber. A type of lever action and one of the most elegant rifles ever made. We are both lever fans here.
I love lever action rifles. I have many Marlins and Winchesters. I really liked the brass frame look of the Henry Goldenboy, but I couldn't rationalize another .22 lever action since I already had a Marlin39M that is a really sweet shooter. Then th e.17 HMR Goldenboy came out. I now had a reason! The gun is beautifully finished.
OK, how in the heck does one shoot accurately with a tang peep sight on a lever action? I love the idea of a tang peep, but cannot shoot one accurately enough. I look thru it (with the smallest aperture) and see the front sight, its base, and part of the barrel! Try to center the front sight in the huge area is seemingly guess-work.
The model's name is a salute to the Feb. 1854 U.S. patent (No. 10,535) secured by Horace Smith and Daniel B Wesson for a "magazine firearm," which cycled via a lever action. The action – later known as the Volcanic after the company that was later formed to sell carbines, rifles, and pistols that used it – helped launch an iconic brand.

Re: Winchester lever-action 30-06 Stay with soft tipped round nosed bullets designed especially for the 30-30. Or buy the new plastic tipped Hornaday spire point bullets designed specifically for the 30-30. Hornaday calls their ammunition Leverevolution. Spire point bullets are very dangerous in lever action tube fed rifles.
I've owned a few over the last couple years. Had a couple Savage 99s, a Marlin 336 and 39a, Winchester 92 and 94s. And my latest purchase is a Rossi 92. Gotta take a few pics of whats in the safe when I get the time. Like the revolver, lever action rifles are a uniquely American creation. Everyone should have at least one of each! John
It is possible to short stroke a lever gun. Even going slowly, the hammer should stay at full cock. With it loaded, if you don't cycle the lever briskly you might have feeding problems. In cowboy shooting, I've see what you describe, but usually after many many rounds. If you're fully cycling the action, I'd get it looked at.
I have a few. Marlin 39A from 1956 Marlin 336 from 1955 Henry Hoo1 .22lr Winchester 94 from 1942 My favorite is the Model 94.
I think my favorite lever .357 is a Winchester 73 — made inChina and branded by Winchester. Added a Marble tang sight and it will now bench 3” groups st 100 yards.
