The template should automatically detect the correct title of the timeline article, as long as it has been named in one of the more common patterns for such articles (check the link to be sure it worked). If the template doesn't detect the correct name automatically, then add it in manually like this:

Click "Preview" In the box that appears, follow the link to create a timeline; Fill in the blanks using the instructions that appear; Once you've saved your timeline, return to the article page and press "save".

To change this template's initial visibility, the |state= parameter may be used: {{Decades and years | state = collapsed}} will show the template collapsed, i.e. hidden apart from its title bar. {{Decades and years | state = expanded}} will show the template expanded, i.e. fully visible.
