Iron County is a county located in the Lead Belt region in the U.S. state of Missouri. As of the 2020 census, the population was 9,537. [1] The largest city and county seat is Ironton. [2] Iron County was officially organized on February 17, 1857, and was named after the abundance of iron ore found within its borders. [3] [4]
In 1925, Missouri designated 92 acres (37 ha) of the home as a memorial to Confederate soldiers. [3] It remained in operation until 1950, when the last Confederate veteran in the state died, after which the state government purchased the site to operate as a state park. [1] The state's land acquisition process was completed in 1952. [4]

Iron County Courthouse is a historic courthouse complex located in Ironton, Iron County, Missouri. In 1979 the courthouse, along with several associated buildings, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places . [ 1 ]
The Columbia Cemetery in Columbia, Missouri has been in use as a cemetery since 1820. [2] The cemetery historically contains, White, African-American, and Jewish (Beth Olem Cemetery, Beth Shalom Cemetery) sections. Located in the cemetery are a vernacular stone receiving vault (1887), and a Romanesque Revival style mausoleum (1911). [3]
Ironton was designated county seat in 1857, soon after the formation of Iron County. [6] Like the county, Ironton was named from the deposits of iron ore found in the vicinity. [7] A post office called Ironton has been in operation since 1858. [8] In early August 1861, Brigader General Sam Grant led a force of four regiments in the area.
