Airbase and adjacent Podgorica Airport share a common runway and various support facilities. It is named after Knjaz Danilo , a prominent 19th century ruler of Montenegro. During the Yugoslav era, it was the home to the 172nd Aviation Brigade of Yugoslav Air Force and its main flying training base for primary and basic pilot training.
Montenegro has two international airports, with their IATA Airport Codes: Podgorica Airport - TGD; Tivat Airport - TIV; Both airports were thoroughly reconstructed in 2006, with a new passenger terminal being built at Podgorica Airport. The airports had a combined traffic of 2,184,857 passengers in 2017.

The airport is situated within Tivatsko polje (Tivat field), a valley surrounded by mountainous terrain, stretching in southeasterly direction from the city of Tivat. The airport's runway is aligned with the valley's orientation, with runway 14's threshold being just 100 m (328 ft) from the Bay of Kotor coastline.
Podgorica Airport is located in Zeta Plain, 11 km (6.8 mi) south of Podgorica City centre, and is Montenegro's main international airport.
