The Chilean Sea is the portion of the Pacific Ocean lying west of the Chilean mainland. The official Chilean usage for Chilean Sea was defined on 30 May 1974 when the Diario oficial de la Republica de Chile published Supreme Decree #346, which declared that "the waters surrounding or touching the shores of the national territory shall be known as Mar Chileno."

The Chiloé Archipelago (Spanish: Archipiélago de Chiloé, pronounced, locally) is a group of islands lying off the coast of Chile, in the Los Lagos Region.It is separated from mainland Chile by the Chacao Channel in the north, the Sea of Chiloé in the east and the Gulf of Corcovado in the southeast.
There is a monument at Playa Blanca ("White Beach"), located between Coronel and Lota in the Biobío Region, representing the middle of continental Chile north-south. The islands were sighted on 12 February 1619 by the Spanish Garcia de Nodal expedition, and named after the cosmographer of the expedition, Diego Ramírez de Arellano. Diego Díaz Island (Spanish: Isla Diego Díaz) is a river island in Biobío River located near Colonia Santa Fe. [7] In 1610, during the Arauco War, Mapuches attacked the Spanish in the island killing 13 soldiers. [9]
