The City of Manistee was founded in 1841 when John and Joseph Stronach established a sawmill within the present city limits of Manistee. The city almost immediately became a lumber boom town, with 200 people living there in 1852 and 1000 by 1861. In the 1860s, the city grew even further, with 300 buildings constructed in 1869 alone.
Parkdale is an unincorporated community in the southwest part of the township, on the northern edge of Manistee Lake where the Manistee River enters the lake. It is at 44°16′03″N 86°18′10″W / 44.26750°N 86.30278°W / 44.26750; -86.30278 on US 31 , near the junction with M-55 on northern boundary of the Manistee city limits
Orchard Beach State Park is a public recreation area covering 201 acres (81 ha) on the shore of Lake Michigan in Manistee Township, Manistee County, Michigan.Situated on a bluff three miles north of the city of Manistee, the state park offers camping, hiking trails, and scenic views over Lake Michigan.
It is bordered to the west by the city of Manistee and to the south by Stronach Township. To the north is the valley of the Manistee River. Highway M-55 crosses the northeast corner of the village, leading east 47 miles (76 km) to Cadillac northwest 1 mile (1.6 km) to U.S. Route 31 in Parkdale, providing road access to the city of Manistee.
The city of Manistee borders the township to the north, and Stronach Township is to the east. According to the United States Census Bureau , Filer Charter Township has a total area of 16.1 square miles (42 km 2 ), of which 0.4 square miles (1.0 km 2 ), or 2.40%, are water.
