The band started when Brown and Roach rented a studio in California. With Brown able to play piano and drums in addition to trumpet, the co-leaders could experiment extensively with these instruments in the studio. They settled on the standard bebop quintet of trumpet, saxophone, piano, bass, and drums, with sax, piano, and bass players needed.
Sheets of sound was a term coined in 1958 by DownBeat magazine jazz critic Ira Gitler to describe the new, unique improvisational style of John Coltrane. [ 1 ] [ 2 ] Gitler first used the term on the liner notes for Soultrane (1958).
He established The Young Lions Series, a two-hour weekly program featuring up-and-coming middle and high school jazz musicians from Southern California, many of whom he has taught and mentored. To date he has hosted more than 160 programs, highlighting more than 250 young musicians in the series.
