3. The works and deeds of the Lord Jesus are most fully revealed in the New Testament. 4. The Psalms command new songs (Psalms 33:3, Psalms 40:3, Psalms 96:1, Psalms 98:1, Psalms 144:9, Psalms 149:1). The Deseret Sunday School Songs continued as a separate hymnal until 1948 because it was used in Sunday School opening exercises. By December 1928, a slightly revised version of the 1927 hymnal was released. The 1928 edition included 421 hymns, 5 of which were new.
The hymn's first known appearance in a hymnal, and in America, was in 1784 in Divine Hymns, or Spiritual Songs: for the use of Religious Assemblies and Private Christians compiled by Joshua Smith, a lay Baptist minister from New Hampshire. It became prevalent in American publications but not English ones.
The hymn is written in a 6.5.6.5.D metre, and originally had eight stanzas. It is partly based on the New Testament passage Philippians 2:5–11, which describes the incarnation, crucifixion and exaltation of Jesus. [7]
The revision was entitled The Psalms, hymns and spiritual songs of the Old and New Testament, faithfully translated into English metre. This revision was the basis for all subsequent editions, and was popularly known as the New England Psalter or New England Version.
