On The A.V. Club, writer Alasdair Wilkins gave the episode A−, calling it a "bittersweet ending for the season". When commenting on the season as a whole, he said "we are left to ponder one of Doctor Who's most complex, emotionally rich seasons". [9] Simon Brew of Den of Geek gave a mixed to positive review.
