The Congress Plaza Hotel is a hotel on Michigan Avenue in Chicago, across from Grant Park. Opened by R.H. Southgate just before the 1893 World’s Fair, [1] the hotel has hosted numerous US Presidents and a wide range of political and cultural events. The hotel is frequently claimed to be one of the most haunted buildings in Chicago. [2] [3] [4]
He is now remembered chiefly for his Chicago hotels. Warren was born in Massachusetts. He moved to Chicago in 1879, and in 1880 joined the firm of Burnham and Root. By 1886 left to start his own firm. His Chicago designs of the 1890s include the Congress, Lexington, Plaza, and Virginia Hotels.
In November 2006, a partnership of Oxford Lodging and Perry Capital purchased the hotel from FelCor Lodging for $70 million. [8] The new owners ended the affiliation with Crowne Plaza and on February 2, 2007, the property was re-christened The Allerton Hotel. Shortly after the purchase, Oxford announced further renovations to the property. [3]
