See the Width section of Help:Table. To summarize, max-width is the preferred way to limit widths on tables. It works on divs too. Note though that in both tables and divs there needs to be spaces in long lines of text or wikitext.
A table is an arrangement of columns and rows that organizes and positions data or images. Tables can be created on Wikipedia pages using special wikitext syntax, and many different styles and tricks can be used to customise them.
Also, if the table has cell spacing (and thus border-collapse=separate), meaning that cells have separate borders with a gap in between, that gap will still be visible. A cruder way to align columns of numbers is to use a figure space   or  , which is intended to be the width of a numeral, though is font-dependent in practice:
An HTML element is a type of HTML (HyperText Markup Language) document component, one of several types of HTML nodes (there are also text nodes, comment nodes and others). [vague] The first used version of HTML was written by Tim Berners-Lee in 1993 and there have since been many versions of HTML.
However, the table margins, border and font-size must be precisely set to match a typical image display. The Image-spec parameter "thumb|" (although auto-thumbnailing to user-preference width) forces a wide left-margin that squeezes the nearby text, so the parameter "center|" can be added to suppress the left-margin padding.
If this is a problem, it can be fixed by pasting the table right off the page (not the wikitext) into Excel2Wiki. Excel2Wiki will compress the wikitext. And it will do it correctly for tables with row headers too (see also Help:Table#Row headers). Tab2wiki will not compress the wikitext at all if this is checked: "First element in a row is a ...
Nesting data tables with header cells also makes it difficult for assistive readers to parse them sensibly, and should be avoided. Nesting tables may be the most appropriate method where cells of the parent table are to be subdivided with uneven internal row or column breaks. Note that each table must begin on a new line.
In addition to the above, or alternatively, a local CSS can be set on the browser. If one uses multiple browsers, each can be set to a different CSS.
